About Us

Shevet Achim (formerly South Island Jewish Center of Mercer Island) shares Judaism's rich tradition in the spirit of "sitting together." The congregation is unique in Seattle in that it follows both the Ashkenazic and Sephardic minhag of Orthodox Judaism.  Shevet Achim welcomes all Jews, regardless of their background or knowledge, to its Shabbat and holiday services and stimulating education programs.

Shevet Achim is a small community blessed with the leadership of Rabbi Yechezkel Kornfeld, who has taught Seattle Jews for over 20 years. Rabbi Kornfeld combines a warm and engaging personal style with deep Torah knowledge. In addition to his responsibilities with the synagogue, Rabbi Kornfeld continues his service as director of adult education of the Central Organization for Jewish Education of Chabad-Lubavich.

Services are led by Rabbi Kornfeld and Shevet Achim congregants. Shabbat and holiday services are held in the lovely, two-story sanctuary of the Northwest Yeshiva High School on Mercer Island.

Shabbat services begin at 9:00 AM between Sukkot & Pesach and 9:30 AM between Pesach & Sukkot. Services are followed by a convivial sit-down kiddush, complete with singing and brief Torah observations from the rabbi. In addition to Shabbat and holiday services, the congregation also holds a Sunday morning minyan at 8 a.m.

Shevet Achim's classes are open to adults and youth. Rabbi Kornfeld lectures on spiritual dimensions of the weekly parsha Monday evenings at 7:30 p.m. Shevet Achim co-sponsors an individualized Torah study session with the Seattle Kollel on Thursday evenings. In addition to these regularly scheduled programs, the congregation periodically offers special seminars with various visiting lecturers. All of Shevet Achim's educational programs are held at the Northwest Yeshiva High School, which graciously provides the congregation with a home.
