The membership at Shevet Achim includes a number of growing young families. We are proud to offer Shabbat programming for the kids, organized and led by hard-working volunteers. These programs teach and entertain the children while allowing parents to participate in services.

Program Description

The program is themed around the parsha (Torah portion) and chaggim (holidays). The children have their own tefilah (prayer) service and d'var torah ("word of Torah") in addition to singing, enjoying stories and playing games. We also provide snacks so the kids can practice the brachot (blessings). Weather permitting, we take the kids outside to play in the shul's expansive yard, surrounded by a protective fence.

The programs are led by a group of our own teenage members who are committed to making shul meaningful and fun for the youngest members in our congregation.

The 8- to 12-year old boys are encouraged to join their fathers after the haftorah for mussaf, and are invited to lead the congregation in Anim Zemirot and Ein Kelokeinu.

Youth Participation

After Shabbat services, the kids join the adults in a sit-down Kiddush.

The children have other prominent roles throughout the year.

Rosh Hashanah  ~ The children join the rabbi on the bimah for the shofar blowing.
Simchat Torah  ~ The children receive treats of candy and dance on the bimah.
Purim  ~ The children attend the megillah reading in costume.

Shavuot

~ The children gather on the bimah to hear the reading of the Ten Commandments from the Torah, and are then treated to ice cream.

Safety and Enjoyment

To ensure the safety and enjoyment of the shul experience, we ask that parents be aware of their children's whereabouts at all times during services and kiddush.

We strive to provide an environment where all children feel welcome and comfortable at shul and encourage older kids to participate in services and be part of the congregation.

We also ask that any snacks parents bring for their kids are both pareve and nut free.

For more information about the kids programs or to send suggestions for activities, please contact youthprogram@shevetachim.com.

We look forward to welcoming new children into our community!
